Section I:  Day to Day Functioning

This Review is designed to guide you and answer your questions. Comments about your answers are located at the end of each section. Remember, there are no right or wrong answers. Each older adult is an individual and has unique areas of strength and weakness regardless of his or her overall ability. If you wish, print the review and circle the responses that best fit your parent.

If your answers are mostly a’s and a few b’s, your parent is probably functioning at an independence level appropriate to an independent living situation. If your answers are a few b’s but mostly c’s and d’s, your parent probably should not be living alone in the community. If you are providing the care directly, it is most likely causing a major disruption in your own family and starting to interfere with outside employment. We hesitate to interfere with our parents’ lives, however, if their safety is in jeopardy, it’s time to either get someone to stay with them or move them to an alternate setting.
